Spotlight on Inclusive Excellence: Dr. Alexandra Shapiro

Lecturer of Russian
Russian Flagship Program
Study Russian in Armenia and Georgia Study Abroad, Program Co-director

In her Russian language courses, Dr. Shapiro has long been taking steps to decolonize the curriculum. The most recent effort is a student created website. She mentors several honors students (Maya Cornish, Caroline Solomon, Nicholas Heiniger, and Katerina Khudoleyev) in constructing a website highlighting the history and culture of the areas where Russian is commonly spoken. The website is being created in conjunction with Elbert County High School and its students studying Russian. The goal is to expand the knowledge of the region among American high school students, to spark interest in the area, and to create a resource accessible to all. So far, Estonia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan have their pages created and the plan is to add information on different regions every year.
