Congratulations to İlker Çatak!

Our department is delighted to share the news that filmmaker İlker Çatak, our Spring 2022 Max Kade Visiting Professor, has been awarded the Golden Bear Award, the highest honor at the Berlin International Film Festival, for his latest film, Yellow Letters!

Set in contemporary Turkey, Yellow Letters follows an acclaimed artist couple whose lives are thrown into turmoil by political persecution. As professional standing gives way to public suspicion and mounting pressure, the film traces the strain placed on their marriage, their family, and their artistic convictions. Through careful character work and emotional intensity, Çatak examines the personal cost of creative expression within a fraught political climate.

The Golden Bear is among the most prestigious awards in international cinema, recognizing films of exceptional artistic merit and global relevance. This recognition underscores the impact of Yellow Letters and highlights Çatak’s distinctive voice as a filmmaker working at the intersection of art, politics, and society.

We were honored to host Çatak during his time as Max Kade Visiting Professor and are pleased to celebrate this significant milestone in his career. We extend our sincere congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
