Russian Major Program Description:
The major in Russian is designed to provide students with communicative proficiency in the Russian language and knowledge of important aspects of Russian culture.
Requirements:
21 semester hours of upper-division RUSS courses, to include the following:
. RUSS 3001, 3002 Conversation and Composition
. RUSS 4270 Introduction to 20th c. Russian Literature
. Either RUSS 4250 Pushkin or RUSS 4260 Introduction to 19th c. Russian literature
No more than one directed study course (RUSS 3990) and no more than one course taught in English translation (RUSS 3300, 4050, 4060, 4070, 4080) may count towards the completion of the major. A minimum grade of C must be earned in each course.
Core Area F (Courses related to the major):
RUSS 2001, 2002 (Intermediate Russian), LING 2100 or 2100H (The Study of Language) plus an additional 9 semesters hours of course work chosen from any of the following areas: beginning/intermediate courses in a second foreign language, anthropology, art, drama and theater, economics, geography, history, linguistics, literature, music, philosophy, political science, speech communication.
Special Requirements
All upper-division courses fulfilling the major requirement must be taken in residence with the exception of a maximum of 6 hours of transfer credit. Upper-division transfer credit from a non-UGA study abroad program may be applied to the major, subject to approval by the department, and provided that credit for RUSS 2002 (or an equivalent course) was earned before participation in the program.
Entrance Requirements
RUSS 2002 is the prerequisite for upper-division courses.
Major completion form
To be cleared for graduation, fill out the major completion form , print it out, and bring it to Prof. Langston for verification.
Course substitution form
If you would like to request a substitution for one of the required courses, fill out the course substitution form and print it out. The form must be submitted to Prof. Langston for approval.
