German American Chamber of Commerce Internship and KICCS (Kicklighter Chamber of Commerce Scholarship) Grant

2012 Application Form

The KICCS grant of $750 is provided in connection with the successful application for a summer internship at the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC). Internship and grant applications are considered together in a single selection process. Students selected as interns will receive the grant to supplement the regular internship remuneration by the GACC. Eligibility for the internship/grant program is restricted to University of Georgia German majors or minors who have completed at least four semesters of German (or the equivalent) at the college level and are in good academic standing. All applicants should submit the application form, an official transcript, one letter of recommendation, and a 1-2 page statement of purpose. In addition, applicants are asked to participate in an on-campus interview with two faculty members and a German American Chamber of Commerce representative.

Kicklighter Study Abroad Travel Grants

Each year, the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies awards approximately 20 Kicklighter travel grants to students planning to study abroad during the summer or for the entire academic year. The grants normally range from $300 - $600 and are intended to encourage study abroad by defraying travel expenses for the student. They are also an academic distinction and are given on a competitive basis. Selection criteria include the student’s overall academic standing, students’ proficiency in German or Russian, course work in the field, and the nature and quality of the program a student plans to attend. Eligible to apply are German, Russian, and Germanic & Slavic majors or minors.

Kicklighter Summer Study in Germany Fellowships

The Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies offers two Kicklighter Summer Study in Germany Fellowships that give graduate students the opportunity to study in Germany after their first year of graduate education in our program. The fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to incoming graduate students and intend to support 6-8 weeks of summer study at a German university or advanced language study in Germany at the Goethe Institute or a comparable institution. The amount of the award for AY 2011-12 is *$4000*. Incoming graduate students who are non-native speakers of German are eligible for this award.

Igor Levitzky Award

The Levitzky Award recognizes academic achievement and the potential for future scholarly research or a professional career related to RUSSIA and/or EASTERN EUROPE. This award will provide funds to support intensive study of Russian or another Slavic language (either in the US or abroad), an independent research project, an internship or some other program for professional development.

Ludwig Uhlig Award

The Ludwig Uhlig Award recognizes outstanding research in the area of German literary or linguistic studies at the graduate or undergraduate level. This award supports the presentation or further development of a project by providing funds for research materials and/or travel to a professional conference or research archives. At time of submission, the research project may be at either a beginning or advanced stage. Award recipients will be determined on the basis of an annual competition. If no submission is judged to be of sufficient quality and promise, the award will not be given in that year.

Special Kicklighter Conference or Research Travel Grant

Special Kicklighter Travel Grants are available to undergraduate and graduate students for conference travel. Eligible are students who have been invited to present a paper or make an equivalent formal presentation at graduate student conferences or other national or international meetings. There is no application deadline. Applications are considered on an ad-hoc basis throughout the academic year.

Other Opportunities

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. national security, broadly defined, and underrepresented in study abroad.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Most Fulbright grants are fully-funded; benefits include roundtrip transportation to the host country, monthly maintenance for the length of the grant, full or partial tuition (if applicable), accident/sickness coverage, and the cost of mandatory Fulbright orientation and enrichment activities.
