Christine Haase's primary research and teaching interests lie within German literature and culture from the 19th to the 21st century. She is the department's specialist for film studies, German film, and popular culture. She is also interested in post-1945 literature and culture with a focus on Holocaust studies, especially questions of cinematic representations of the Holocaust and the Third Reich. Prof. Haase has written on the Holocaust, German cinema, and concepts and functions of laughter and the funny. In 2007, she published a book on transcultural film making by German directors, When Heimat Meets Hollywood: German Filmmakers and America 1985-2005. Her current research centers on visual representations of the Holocaust and the Third Reich in the cinema as well as in the fine arts, and on the links between German Cinematic and Fine Arts Traditions in general.
