Brechtje Beuker's primary teaching and research interests are 20 th and 21 st century German and Austrian literature, theater and performance studies, and the intersection of aesthetics and violence. In her dissertation, she focused on the genre of postdramatic theater and explored how contemporary playwrights and directors such as Elfriede Jelinek, Heiner Müller, René Pollesch, and Christoph Schlingensief make use of a violent performative aesthetic in order to challenge general perceptions of violence. In addition to German Studies, Brechtje is also interested in Dutch literature and culture.
