INTL 4280: Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict
The power of ethnicity has become brutally evident in recent years, as nationalism has ripped apart countries and inter-ethnic strife has erupted into bloody conflicts in a growing number of locations across the world.  Relying on theoretical readings and the Croatian experience as a case study, we will investigate the bases of ethnic/national identity as well as the sources of inter-ethnic conflict.  Through site visits, meetings with Croatian specialists, interactions with the members of the local population, and class discussions, we will learn about the Croatian identity, culture, history, and the 1991-95 war.

Note: Interested students who have already earned credit for INTL 4280 or 4420 can take this course as an independent study. Please contact Dr. Tir to make the arrangements.
